Mattole Beach Rest Day

7/22/2011

Waking up at Mattole Beach.
After an extended breaking of the fast, we headed out to the beach to see if we could get to a lighthouse three miles down the coast.

A cache of sea urchins we stumbled upon

A tide pool full of anemones or the green eye of the rock goddess.

A living sea urchin that hopefully will be underwater and happy again at high tide.

Curious, but skittish group of harbor seals.

Robert walking ahead of me, where else? The mountains dropped sharply to the beach.

After a while on the beach, we got to a point where the trail seemed to take off up the mountainside to avoid a place where the beach is so small that at high tide it is impassable. We followed the trail and got to bushwhack through thigh high grass when the trail evaporated.

After cresting a hill, we got a nice view down the coast.

This picture was taken after we made it back to the beach. We were on top of this hill and had to come down it, never mind the cliff. It was a little hairy at times because even away from the cliff the pitch was quite steep, but we refused to turn back.

Our destination: Punta Gorda Lighthouse
From the inside looking out

Nice grating

Raise your hand if you are a goober.

To get up into the lighthouse, you had to climb up a spiral ladder, culminating in a tiny hole - we barely fit.

Everything I see is mine

More harbor seals

After a long day on the beach, we rewarded ourselves with a shower!

We also made a giant fire because we found a brush/wood pile in the bushes. It took a lot of wood to keep the fire going because the wind whipped the fire into a continual frenzy. Here we are roasting corn on the fire. Robert is ghosted because he was adamant about ruining the picture and ran away halfway through - too late. I already stole at least half of his soul!!

We also made enchiladas in the Dutch Oven

Tasty, tasty enchiladas
