1-9-2011: Saigon/HCMC

While in HCMC we visited the War Remnants Museum. The museum used to
be called the Museum of American War Crimes, if that gives you any
indication of the slant of the museum. There were american aircraft
out front, a confusing section on torture by the French (I think)
called tiger cages - disturbing, the only other bit that we went
through was an exhibit called the Requiem Exhibit.

The Requiem was the best part and the reason we went to the museum in
the first place. Tim page, a war photographer, and one of his buddies
whose name I forget collected a vast number of photos from the
war/wars in Vietnam from documentary photographers from any and all
nations who had photographers there. The exhibit is meant to highlight
and commemorate those photographers who lost their lives in the
conflict. One of the pictures were quite striking, but the captions
were poorly translated and sometimes poorly written because they were
left as is, whatever the photographer scribbled down. Also, the
presentation of the photos was horrible; there was a glare on every
photo because of the lighting in the room. Overall, it was interesting
and worth a trip, but we quickly tired of bobbing our heads and
deciphering the captions.

Thanks, I just got one more invite - UC Irvine. I am hopeful that the
invites will translate into invites. Garage mess sounds like a hassle.
I know you like books, but you should look into Internet resources
too.

Walked towards war remnants museum, but closed until 1:30, so we took
a detour through a beautiful park: cong Vien van hoa park.
Museum: tiger cages, requiem, burned out
Left to get food and walk to a market
Ate at pho 2000 by ben thanh market
Walked to the old market, bought cheese and bread and coffee makers
Walked home on a very bustling street
Took a nap, left the house at about ten to have dinner - at Kim cafe,
forgettable, but the table across from us was full of four men and
four prostitutes, which is always fun. Roasted chicken, fries, rice
and morning glory.
Have to ring bell to get in and go to sleep
